“There are massive technologies available to us, not available in the 1960s. They were not designed for us, they were not intended for us, and it was never ever thought that such power should flow into the hands of freaks such as ourselves. Nevertheless, through the perverse nature of the unfolding of the world, we have such tools. I’m referring, as you probably anticipate, to the World Wide Web and the Internet.”
~ Terence McKenna, 1996

“It really almost makes you ask the question, would it have been better if we had never invented the internet.”
~ Jay Rockefeller, 2009

Ho ho ho! Happy Alcoholic Mall Santa Day! I’m being told that online article viewership tends to take a dive during the holidays; people are too busy telling their nosy Aunt Rhonda why they’re still not married and yes they know they’re not getting any younger and no they’re not a lesbian but that’s okay nowadays for your information Aunt Rhonda to be bothered with some snarky sheila’s online political opinions. So I’m going to take that as a permission from the universe to write as though no one’s reading and say stuff I might normally shy away from, which could be a useful exercise.

On Friday evening President Obama quietly signed the Countering Disinformation and Propaganda Act into law as part of 2017’s NDAA, which had passed with massive veto-proof majorities in both the House and the Senate previously. The new law mandates a chunk of the NDAA’s budget be used to create what it calls a “Global Engagement Center” within the State Department, which shall carry out such functions as analyzing “relevant information, data, analysis, and analytics from United States Government agencies, United States allies and partner nations, think tanks, academic institutions, civil society groups, and other nongovernmental organizations” and “support the development and dissemination of fact-based narratives and analysis to counter propaganda and disinformation directed at the United States and United States allies and partner nations.”

Basically the new law allots a bunch of money for a concerted effort to stomp out anything the State Department decides to label “foreign propaganda”, and if the recent behavior of CIA-funded state propaganda mill the Washington Post is any indication, “foreign propaganda” will be privately defined as anything that might deter U.S. voters from supporting the plutocrat-owned political establishment. WaPo recently ran a story featuring a McCarthyite blacklist of hundreds of alternative media sites, many of them highly respected, accusing them of distributing Russian propaganda. Given WaPo’s extreme support for the Democratic establishment and its known financial ties to the CIA, we can get a pretty good idea of what the establishment is moving toward. Alternative media had a major impact on the 2016 election, and the plutocrats are trying to exterminate it so that never happens again.

If you’re just tuning in, this is not a new development but a continued escalation of a preexisting trend. In 2012 (also snuck in as part of the upcoming fiscal year’s NDAA, damn them), a 1948 law forbidding the U.S. government from propagandizing and conducting psy-ops on its citizens was repealed, and the very next presidential election cycle we saw everyone not named Hillary Clinton aggressively slandered and torpedoed by the corporate media like nothing we’ve ever seen before. The anti-propaganda law was repealed for that specific purpose; to manipulate the public into doing what existing power structures want them to do. You don't pass legislation that lets you conduct psychological operations on your citizens unless you plan on doing just that; they didn't pass is so that Joe and Jane America could open up a mom and pop propaganda shop on Main Street.

This all explains why Democrats have been acting like raving lunatics lately, if you’ve been curious. They were propagandized for over a year that it would be the end of the world if Clinton wasn’t elected, and because of alternative media the script was flipped and that didn’t happen. Then instead of calming everyone down and putting out the flames of fear it started, corporate media has instead been trying to re-route everyone’s fear to Russia, and has largely succeeded in doing so. The plan seems to be to keep Trump’s approval ratings low and keep everyone off balance and afraid until the status quo can be safely rescued from its precarious position; they’ll happily trade four years of human misery and fear if it will let them put a more reliable establishment muppet in the White House in 2020 with a re-sedated compliant populace behind them. Democrats have been acting crazy because they’re victims of psychologically abusive government psy-ops, plain and simple.

All because the internet caused the ruling elites to lose control of the narrative. All of a sudden they had what used to be a tiny fringe group of mostly conspiracy theorists and anarchists blow up as populism entered the mainstream with immensely popular candidates on both the left and the right telling the American people that they’re being abused and manipulated by a few extremely powerful individuals who nobody elected. People started sharing video clips, think pieces, ideas and information online, and for the first time ever the shadow government was having an uncomfortable amount of light shone on it. This contrasted sharply with the story they’d had everyone buying into for a long time, and they are acutely aware that if the public loses belief in that story altogether their power and influence can be shrugged off by the people like a warm coat on a summer day as they choose to create a saner, more collaborative and less ecocidal society.

So now we’ve got ourselves a psywar. A large-scale battle of psychological manipulations inflicted upon the American people by the U.S. government to keep the power structures where they are. They’re ramping up their firepower, so we need to as well. We need to be speaking truth to power louder and brighter than ever, and the more voices we’ve got speaking out against the lies and manipulations the better. We can’t let them lull us back to sleep.

We win the psywar by refusing to shut up and back down, by refusing to be bullied, shamed or gaslighted out of speaking our truth. Psychological manipulations are the only major tools these people have in their toolboxes, because if they ever go full totalitarian and start using violence and overt suppression everyone will recognize them for what they are, and their entire way of operating is dependent upon that not happening. All we have to do is keep relentlessly speaking our truth loud and proud; if they can’t manipulate us into stopping that then there’s no way they can win.

In 2017 and in every year thereafter, please speak your truth, dear reader. Say it loud, say it proud, and say it like you’re right, because you are. Things are only going to get more interesting and exciting going forward.
